84 Lumber Expands Military Discount, Honors Service Members with National Initiatives During Military Appreciation Month - May 2025

Company marks 10 years of its Operation Appreciation program to recognize troops and veterans

EIGHTY FOUR, Pa. (April 30, 2025) – In a powerful show of gratitude this May, 84 Lumber is doubling its in-store discount for military veterans, active-duty service members, and first responders to 20 percent off merchandise for the month of May at all locations across the country. The expanded offer, part of the company’s broader Operation Appreciation program, is one of several ways the nation’s largest privately held building materials supplier is recognizing those who serve during Military Appreciation Month.

“This year marks the 10th anniversary of Operation Appreciation, and we’re incredibly proud of how this initiative has grown into a meaningful expression of our gratitude for those who serve,” said Amy Smiley, vice president of marketing at 84 Lumber. “From expanded discounts and national partnerships to spotlighting veteran-owned businesses and supporting our own veteran associates, we remain committed to honoring the sacrifices of service members and their families — not just during Military Appreciation Month, but all year long.”

The 20 percent discount, which doubles the company’s usual offer, reflects 84 Lumber’s continued commitment to supporting those in uniform through career opportunities, national partnerships, and community recognition.

A National Stage for Honor and Reflection

At the national level, 84 Lumber is once again a proud sponsor of the National Memorial Day Concert, America’s national night of remembrance.  The live broadcast, a longstanding tribute to military service members, will air live on Sunday, May 25, at 8 p.m. EST on PBS. The National Memorial Day Concert is the nation’s premier Memorial Day event and the longest-running national television broadcast honoring America’s heroes. Co-hosted by Tony Award-winner Joe Mantegna and Emmy Award-winner Gary Sinise, the 90-minute special features powerful storytelling and musical performances by world-renowned artists and the National Symphony Orchestra, paying tribute to service members, veterans, military families, and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Operation Appreciation: A Decade of Meaningful Impact

As part of its monthlong campaign, 84 Lumber is rolling out several additional initiatives under the Operation Appreciation umbrella, including modifying its logo and social media presence to feature patriotic imagery in recognition of Military Appreciation Month.

All associates will receive commemorative Operation Appreciation T-shirts as a symbolic gesture of thanks. The company is also offering veteran and active-duty associates an additional paid day off to be used on a military-related holiday such as Memorial Day, Veterans Day, or another observance. The initiative is designed to give associates time for personal reflection or to participate in commemorative events.

Veterans and first responders are honored in other ways as well. Through a special giveaway campaign, 84 Lumber is spotlighting veteran-owned small businesses. Associates will also have a chance to win featured items through an internal raffle, allowing associates to further engage with and support these veteran-owned brands.

In collaboration with the Pittsburgh Pirates, 84 Lumber is continuing its sponsorship of Military Mondays, where five games throughout the season will recognize local military organizations. One of these games will specifically honor the Friends of the Pittsburgh Fisher House, a nonprofit supporting military families. Each participating group will receive a $5,000 grant from Pirates Charities, in addition to social media coverage and complimentary game tickets.

Additionally, 84 Lumber will proudly sponsor Armed Forces Night, which will feature a 1,000-ticket giveaway for military service members and veterans, discounted tickets for 84 Lumber associates, and the ceremonial first pitch thrown by a veteran associate. The company will also continue its support of the Military Discount Ticket Program, which provides discounted tickets for military families and contributes a portion of sales to Friends of Pittsburgh Fisher House.

As part of its philanthropic efforts, 84 Lumber will donate $5,000 to the Malone Family Foundation to support its Red, White, and Blue initiative, which benefits veterans, first responders, and their families. The company is also supporting the foundation’s annual Black & Gold Gala, which raises funds for military-related causes.

Career development remains a key part of the company’s long-term commitment to veterans.

“At 84 Lumber, we understand that veterans bring invaluable leadership, skills and experience to the workplace,” said Smiley. “We are committed to not only honoring their service but also offering them opportunities to grow and thrive in their careers. Veterans are a vital part of our team, and we are proud to offer them a meaningful place to continue their leadership journey with us.”

Operation Appreciation reflects 84 Lumber’s ongoing effort to ensure that military service members, veterans, and their families are supported not only during Military Appreciation Month, but year-round.
