Longtime Vice President of Purchasing leaves legacy

EIGHTY FOUR, Pa. (Jan. 20, 2026) – 84 Lumber, the nation’s largest privately held supplier of building materials, today announced that Mitch Wagner, Vice President of Purchasing, has announced his retirement after 42 years with the company.

Wagner’s career at 84 Lumber has been defined by steady leadership, deep industry knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to supporting the company’s stores, customers, and vendor partners. Over the past four decades, he helped guide purchasing strategy through significant growth and change, leaving a lasting impact across the company, from the strong vendor relationships he built to the teams he supported every day.

Wagner began his career at 84 Lumber as a manager trainee before coming to Team Headquarters to work in inventory management. From there, he transitioned into purchasing and steadily rose through the ranks to Vice President of Purchasing. Throughout his career, he maintained a strong connection to the field and served as a vital link between stores and the purchasing organization. Known for open communication and thoughtful leadership, Wagner consistently listened to the needs of the field to help ensure purchasing decisions supported stores and customers.

Here are a few reflections from those who worked closely with Wagner, which speak about the impact of his career:

“I am unbelievably happy for my great friend Mitch Wagner. Mitch truly is one of one and I can personally say that I learned so much from him, especially in my early days. 84 Lumber is his passion, and all the hard work that he has given to this company over the last 42 years has been revolutionary. He is a cornerstone of 84 and made sure to build a great foundation within the Purchasing team. I am excited that he can enjoy the family he has built at home. Thank you so much Mitch, from the bottom of my heart, for everything that you have done for 84 Lumber.”- Maggie Hardy, Owner & CEO, 84 Lumber

“One of the most valuable lessons Mitch Wagner has taught is the importance of never burning a bridge with people or partners. He leads with heart and genuinely cares about his people. Mitch creates an environment where individuals are empowered to be themselves, make decisions, and take ownership of their departments.”- Dave Rumbaugh, VP of Purchasing, 84 Lumber

“Mitch, it has been a privilege to work with you closely over the years. From that vantage point, I have witnessed the integrity, vision, and genuine care you bring to every interaction and relationship. Under your leadership at 84 Lumber, you did more than help build a successful company, you helped build a culture of partnership and trust that made our work together not just productive, but truly enjoyable. Your commitment to service and partnership has shaped not only your own organization, but also the way many of us in the industry think about collaboration. On behalf of all of us at Boise Cascade, congratulations on your well-deserved retirement. Please know how much we value our partnership and how grateful we are for your leadership. We wish you health, happiness, and all the best in the years ahead.”- Nate Jorgensen, CEO, Boise Cascade

Mitch’s sole goal was to grow 84 Lumbers business profitably. I admire Mitch and I will never ever forget him!”- Nick Derrico, Owner, United Window & Door

“Mitch Wagner is 84 Lumber through and through. ‘Work hard, care, and check your ego at the door’ - Mitch has embodied this culture since day 1, and it shines through in everything that he does. He has had a successful 42-year career, and I have been blessed to work with him for 35 of those years. He has done a great job at mentoring and coaching his people, and I know that 84 Purchasing is in good hands going forward. I am proud of what Mitch has accomplished, and his true legacy will always be the strength and success of our Purchasing team.
