84 Lumber Reveals Handicap Accessible Home Makeover for a Local Family in Need

President Maggie Hardy Knox Personally Donates $10,000 to the cause

When 84 Lumber President Maggie Hardy Knox heard the news that Autumn Zundel’s family needed to update their house to accommodate 13-year-old Autumn’s new disabilities, she jumped into action. Maggie, along with 84 Lumber and Autumn’s community, have been working hard together over the last several weeks to remodel the Zundel family home, including building a brand-new accessible addition to the house.

The home makeover project has been a light in the Zundel family’s life after an emotional and difficult start to the year. In January of 2020, Autumn was taken to the hospital, complaining of shoulder pain. That day forever changed her life when she was diagnosed with an Anterior Mediastinal Mass between her heart and lungs. She was taken in for surgical removal of the mass, during which she incurred hemorrhagic shock, major blood loss and went into cardiac arrest, incurring a lengthy time of lack of oxygen to the brain. Today, her family is battling an unknown future and a new disability for Autumn.

“When my husband and I first heard Autumn’s story, we knew immediately that we wanted to help,” said Maggie Hardy Knox. “I was so proud when the rest of my 84 Lumber family got right on board to help out as well, and given the current circumstances, they were able to get it done in record time! It was truly a team effort, and we plan to continue helping this family as much as we possibly can while they navigate the road to recovery.”

84 Lumber donated all the materials for the home makeover, and Maggie and her husband Shawn Knox graciously donated $10,000 directly to the family as well. 84 Lumber was able to assist with the framing before the social distancing guidelines and construction restrictions were put into place in the state of Pennsylvania. The Zundel family completed the remainder of the labor themselves.
