EIGHTY FOUR, Pa. (May 21, 2026) – Forbes has recognized 84 Lumber on their latest list, America’s Largest Family Businesses. The inaugural list ranks the 100 biggest family businesses in the country by revenue, with 84 Lumber ranking No. 89.
“Being recognized by Forbes as one of America’s largest family businesses is incredibly meaningful to us,” said Maggie Hardy, owner and CEO of 84 Lumber. “We are especially proud to be 100% privately held in an industry where many others on this list are not. As a privately held, family-owned company, we’ve always had the ability to think long term, stay true to our values, and make decisions that prioritize our associates, customers, and vendor partners. That independence and family culture have been key to our success over the past 70 years.”
Created in honor of the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary, Forbes’ America’s Largest Family Businesses list highlights companies that continue to serve as a foundation of the U.S. economy. According to Forbes, family-owned businesses account for an estimated 25 percent of U.S. companies and employ approximately 23 percent of the American workforce. The inaugural list features 100 companies from 31 states, including 67 privately held businesses.
To develop the rankings, Forbes consulted family business experts from leading universities, including Babson College, Northwestern University, and the University of North Carolina. Companies with living founders were generally excluded unless leadership had transitioned to a second generation serving as chairman or CEO.
