EIGHTY FOUR, Pa. (Oct. 28, 2019) – 84 Lumber partnered with “Good Morning America” for the second time in two months to contribute to a worthy cause. On the Oct. 23 airing of “Strahan, Sara and Keke,” a group of friends from West Philadelphia discussed how they each saved $50 a week for two years to buy and renovate a distressed house in their neighborhood. Their goal is to convert it into affordable housing and pave the way for a much-needed revival in the community. After learning about their story, 84 Lumber made a $15,000 material donation to help the group with the renovation.
“It was an honor to partner with ‘Good Morning America’ again to celebrate an incredible story about teamwork, friendship and community,” said Amy Smiley, vice president of marketing for 84 Lumber. “We have no doubt that this group of determined young men will make a lasting impact on their neighborhood and those who live there. We can’t wait to see what they’ll accomplish.”
The group will purchase materials from a local 84 Lumber store to make more headway on their first project, but they’re just getting started.
“Our purpose, in a nutshell, [is] to buy these distressed properties to fix them up and make them affordable living for people who deserve to benefit from a better community where they don't have to worry about people getting shot, or something happening to their kids, or gangs or streets sucking up their children,” said Najee Hannigan, who devised the plan and recruited several of his friends to join. “They deserve that, and that's what our mission is.”
